In Upon Reflection, Phonsay creates a beautifully composed moment of stillness—one that feels simple at first, yet becomes increasingly intriguing the longer we look.

A solitary woman stands beside her small dog against a monumental grid of soft green architecture. Her immaculate white coat, interrupted by a striking line of orange, gives her an almost cinematic presence. Both figures face us directly, perfectly still, while beneath them the water quietly returns their image in a softened, slightly altered reflection.

The title provides the key. Upon Reflection speaks not only of the physical mirror created by the water, but of that very human act of looking inward. Who are we when everything around us becomes quiet? How closely does the person we present to the world resemble the person we see when we truly examine ourselves?

There is also something wonderfully Phonsay about the little dog. Its presence gently disrupts the formality of the scene, introducing warmth, companionship and just enough humour to prevent the work from becoming overly serious. While the woman appears poised and composed, her four-legged companion simply exists in the moment—perhaps offering its own lesson in how to live.

The architecture plays an equally important role. Its ordered grid suggests structure, routine and control, while the dark openings on either side hint at spaces beyond what we can immediately see. In contrast, the water introduces movement and imperfection: the precise world above becomes softer and less certain below.

This tension between control and fluidity, appearance and reality, solitude and companionship gives Upon Reflection its quiet emotional strength.
