Michel Canetti
Bringing chic glamour to painting
Paris-born Michel Canetti is an artist and advertising illustrator who has lived in Melbourne since 1997. Michel’s subject matter is the female form, which he portrays using sweeping lines that are almost like calligraphy.
Over the years, Michel has earned a reputation as a leading illustrator in fashion and luxury, working for publications including Elle, Vogue, and Le Figaro.
He has a prestigious list of former clients including Diana Ferrari, Air France, Renault, Guerlain, Chanel, Givenchy, De Beers, to namedrop a few.
A disarming signature style
In the late 70s Michel studied Visual Arts at the Sorbonne and undertook a masters in painting restoration. As an advertising illustrator, Michel used to paint for himself. But when he started to paint professionally, he wanted to be represented by Thierry B Fine Arts. More than twenty years later, our partnership continues.
His style is classic French elegance, distilled to its essence. Maybe that’s why Michels’ style never goes out of fashion.
So what’s the secret to these enduring paintings that steal the show?
In his paintings, Michel continues to explore the elegant curves of the female form, in his instantly recognisable signature style. That’s what gives these paintings longevity.
His focus is most often a female face, conveyed with loose gestures that hint at moments of intimacy and passion.
With his painterly approach, he manages to be both versatile and immediately recognisable
Michel explains what people love about his figurative works:
“People like my paintings because of how it makes them feel. It’s like when you look at a Greek statue, you don’t try to find a story behind it. You just love it because it’s beautiful.”
Give in to the irresistible allure
Michel’s paintings invite your attention, participation and pleasure.
Art Critic Davis Thomas describes Michel’s work:
“His approach is disarming, direct, and minimal, capturing good looks and alluring charms in a few deft strokes of the brush. His underlying touch of eroticism is as delicate and enticing as traces of an exquisite perfume.”
The colour range is limited with neutrals of black, white and a seductive grey. They provide the ideal contrast with the passionate reds of lips exclusive and parted.
The combined effect is sensuous and engaging.
